Equine Conditions

Horse are subjected to varying levels of stress (physical/emotional) over the course of a lifetime, because of this they develop chronically contracted muscles. These muscular contractions become so deeply unconscious that eventually horses no longer have a freedom to their movement . This is what we term "Sensory Motor Amnesia" (SMA).

The effects of Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) happen gradually and are often mistaken for the signs of growing old. Horses habitually begin to hold themselves tightly in reaction to pain, injury or emotional stress. Your horse can no longer move about freely because strong reflex messages from its brain cause the muscles to be constantly contracted.

Because this event takes place in their central nervous system, we are not aware of it, yet it affects horses to their very core.
Everything about who they are, what they experience and what they can do, is profoundly diminished by SMA.

Here is a list of conditions that we believe “ Sensory Motor Amnesia” plays a role, which can be helped by Equine Hanna Somatic Education.
